WASH in Western Province
Project Description
"In this project, World Vision will improve the quality of life for residents of South and Middle Fly of the Western Province of PNG by increasing the adoption of hygiene practices and improving sustainable, equitable access to water and sanitation services. These areas are impacted by seasonal flooding, high water tables and erosion that present technical and social barriers to improving WASH. The project aims to support the Provincial Department of Health (PDOH) and the Provincial WASH Committee (PWC) to coordinate and support communities to take increased responsibility for WASH outcomes. The project goal – improved health and quality of life – will be achieved through:
1) Improved coordination, capacity and governance amongst WASH actors and community level structures to sustain services
2) Improved knowledge and adoption of safe, contextually and environmentally appropriate, hygiene practices
3) Improved equitable access to safe water and sanitation
The project is underpinned by a Theory of Change that aims to address demand and supply in the target areas. The project focuses on supply by strengthening WASH coordination and governance, to ensure improved management of water and sanitation systems and structures as well as increasing accessibility for all in the community. The delivery team and change agents will aim to increase demand for sanitation services and improve hygiene, with recognition of the limited demand at the current time, through identifying the underlying barriers and motivators for behaviour change in the target communities.
Key deliverables of the project include:
(I) improved sanitation and hygiene behaviours in the target communities, at schools, and health facilities
(II) providing 16 health facilities and 16 schools with access to safe water and cost-effective and sustainable sanitation solutions
(III) increased capacity of the Provincial Water Committee to guide and support the implementation of the Provincial WASH Plan, as well as;
(IV) improved coordination between WASH stakeholders in Western Province for more effective delivery of WASH services to the population.
This will result in empowered communities and WASH stakeholders within the Provincial authorities, as well as improved health outcomes for the target communities in South and Middle Fly. "
Project Location
World Vision will work with remote communities in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea who have been adversely impacted by prolonged underinvestment in WASH, resulting in very low access to safe WASH facilities. Hygiene is a particular concern and diseases such as cholera and tuberculosis have had significant and ongoing impact. Target areas include Bamu Local Level Government (LLG), Oriomo-Bituri LLG, and Kiwai LLG. Civil society is under-developed, representing an opportunity to build governance, capacity and other social capital, for sustainable improvement in water, sanitation and hygiene.
